Kennedy Agyapong Vows to Contest NPP Flagbearer Position Despite Withdrawal from Thank You Tour

Kennedy Agyapong, a former member of Parliament and flagbearer aspirant, has declared that nobody can stop him from contesting for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position. His comments come after he withdrew from the NPP Thank You Tour following a violent incident that left a student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) stabbed. Agyapong stated that he joined Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the sake of unity, but it became clear that he was not wanted.

Agyapong explained that he withdrew from the tour to protect his team, citing threats to their lives. He expressed concern about the one-sided politics within the party, where some groups from Dr. Bawumia’s camp would twist his words. Agyapong cautioned the NPP fraternity to desist from such politics, which he believes will not help the party. Despite his withdrawal, Agyapong remains determined to contest for the flagbearer position.

The incident that led to Agyapong’s withdrawal occurred during the NPP Thank You Tour at Bantama, where a student affiliated with Unity Hall (Conti) was stabbed multiple times. Reports suggest that the victim was part of the Jama Group from Unity Hall hired by Agyapong. Eyewitnesses claim that a friend of Agyapong’s dashed the group some money, which led to an altercation with suspected NPP members who stormed the place. The Jama group member was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Agyapong has led his team to lodge an official complaint with the Ghana Police Service regarding the incident. The police have yet to make an arrest, and the investigation is ongoing. Agyapong’s determination to contest for the flagbearer position remains unwavering, despite the challenges he has faced.

The incident has raised concerns about the level of violence within the NPP and the ability of the party to manage internal conflicts. Agyapong’s determination to contest for the flagbearer position may further polarize the party, particularly if his supporters feel that he is being targeted. The party’s leadership will need to address these concerns and ensure a fair and peaceful process for all aspirants.

Agyapong has declared that he will regroup and take steps to enhance his chances of winning the flagbearer position. His next steps will be closely watched by party members and supporters, and his ability to navigate the party’s internal dynamics will be crucial in determining his success. With the NPP’s future leadership at stake, the party will need to ensure that the process is transparent, fair, and free from violence.
