Kelvin Yeboah scores in Minnesota United’s win against St. Louis City
Italian-Ghanaian striker Kelvin Yeboah shone under the lights at Allianz Field as Minnesota United edged St. Louis City 3-2 in a thrilling US Open Cup Round of 16 match on Wednesday night.
Yeboah’s clinical finish in the 10th minute, slotting home Julian Gressel’s low cross, gave the Loons a dream start.
He was a constant threat throughout the game, using his pace and movement to trouble the St. Louis defense, and lasted the full 90 minutes.
Despite Minnesota’s dominant start, St. Louis City staged a remarkable comeback in the second half. Marcel Hartel’s header off Timo Baumgartl’s assist in the 55th minute leveled the score, and just 10 minutes later, João Klauss headed home Hartel’s cross again, putting St. Louis ahead 2-1.
However, Minnesota’s Anthony Markanich proved to be the hero, scoring twice in quick succession to seal the win. He netted a low drive in the 85th minute off Joaquín Pereyra’s assist and then headed home another Pereyra cross three minutes later.
This dramatic turn of events extended Minnesota’s head-to-head record over St. Louis to five wins in six meetings.
The Loons now gear up for their upcoming MLS match against Austin FC at Allianz Field on May 25, 00:30 GMT.
