Joining a political Party is ultimately a personal choice for every musician – Abena Ruthy

Renowned Ghanaian gospel and the second vice President for the Musician Union of Ghana, (MUSIGA) Abena Ruthy, made waves during her appearance on ‘Ahotor Mmre’ today 22nd November 2024, where she touched on the often-debated topic of musicians affiliating with political parties.

Abena Ruthy attended to discuss a peace song launched by MUSIGA, themed “1 Ghana,” which emphasizes our unity and the importance of striving for peace in the upcoming elections this December.

Obaapa Janee inquired whether it is appropriate for a gospel artist to support or campaign for a political party, and she responded by saying:

“It is every musician’s choice to join a political party, but you have to know what you’re involved in, so it won’t affect your career in the long run.” Her statement emphasized the importance of intentionality and foresight when engaging in politically charged activities as an artist.

She elaborated that while it is within every musician’s democratic right to support a political cause, doing so without careful thought could lead to unintended consequences. “Politics can be polarizing,” she added, “and as public figures, we must weigh how our choices align with our long-term goals and the perception of our brand.”

Her comments come when some Ghanaian entertainers have faced backlash for their political affiliations, sometimes leading to career slumps or loss of fan support.

Abena Ruthy’s advice serves as a reminder to Ghanaian musicians and creatives everywhere: while pursuing personal convictions is important, understanding their ripple effects on one’s career is crucial.
