President-elect John Dramani Mahama has declared agriculture his new passion and pledged to transform the sector under his administration, emphasizing its potential as a cornerstone of Ghana’s economic growth.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, who congratulated him on his election victory, Mr. Mahama highlighted the critical role agriculture can play in driving the country’s development.
He underscored his administration’s commitment to adopting innovative approaches and leveraging partnerships to boost the sector.
“Agriculture and agribusiness have become a personal passion of mine,” he remarked. “We are keen on sharing technology, exchanging knowledge, and implementing strategies to achieve agricultural growth and food self-sufficiency in Ghana.”
As part of his campaign promises, Mr. Mahama outlined a bold vision to rename the Ministry of Agriculture to reflect its expanded focus on agribusiness.
This rebranding, he explained, would symbolize a new era of prioritizing agriculture as a “secret weapon” for transforming the economy.
He envisions agribusiness as a powerful driver of growth, capable of creating jobs, improving rural livelihoods, and reducing the country’s reliance on food imports.
A key component of his agenda is the establishment of Farmers Service Centres, strategically located across the country to provide essential support to farmers.
These centers will offer access to modern farming equipment, seeds, fertilizers, and training to enhance productivity.
By addressing critical challenges faced by farmers, the initiative aims to empower the agricultural workforce and attract younger generations to farming.
During the meeting on Tuesday, December 17, Mr. Mahama took the first step toward fulfilling these promises by seeking collaboration with the United States.
He expressed optimism about the prospect of sharing advanced agricultural technologies and practices with Ghana, which would boost innovation in the sector and enable farmers to adopt more efficient and sustainable methods.
“We are exploring ways to strengthen our ties with the United States to enhance our agricultural sector,” the president-elect said. “This partnership will help us modernize farming practices, improve yields, and ensure food security for our people.”
H.E Mahama’s administration is poised to prioritize agriculture as a pillar of economic transformation, combining local ingenuity with international expertise to create a thriving, self-sufficient agricultural ecosystem.
