John Mahama Vows to Revamp FreeSHS, Expand Access, and Improve Quality

National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama has criticized the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for relying solely on the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy as their campaign message for the upcoming 2024 elections.

Speaking at a rally in Apam, Gomoa West District, Mr. Mahama pointed out that while the NPP touts Free SHS as a major achievement, it’s far from genuinely free, as families are still burdened with hidden costs and shortages.

John Mahama rejected accusations that he plans to abolish the policy, reaffirming instead his commitment to improve and expand it if elected.

“As someone deeply invested in the value of education, I will work to make Free SHS more effective and beneficial for all Ghanaians,” he stated.

Mr. Mahama pledged that under his administration, schools would receive direct funding to purchase quality food supplies locally, rather than relying solely on the National Buffer Stock Company, ensuring students have access to nutritious meals.

Additionally, he promised to continue the construction of the abandoned E-Blocks he initiated during his previous term to alleviate overcrowding in schools.

Mr. Mahama pledged to create a dedicated fund to secure long-term financing for the Free SHS program.

Ahotor FM’s Emmanuel Romeo Tetteh writes that, Mr. Mahama also emphasized his plan to include private senior high schools under the Free SHS policy, expanding access and relieving pressure on public schools.

He concluded by pledging a stakeholder meeting on the future of Free SHS, stating that his administration would prioritize quality, inclusivity, and sustainability to create an educational system that serves all Ghanaians well.
