John Dramani Mahama, flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has vowed to include private secondary schools in Ghana’s Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program if elected in the upcoming December elections.
Speaking in the Okaikwei South Constituency during his two-day tour of the Greater Accra Region, Mr. Mahama argued that many private schools possess the infrastructure and resources necessary to support the program, making their inclusion essential.
John Mahama emphasized the crucial role private schools play in delivering quality education and called for the government to collaborate with them to improve the education system.
He praised private school management for their longstanding contributions, noting their leadership in introducing innovative teaching methods and practices.
The NDC flag bearer also promised that his government would bring all education stakeholders together to review the entire structure of Ghana’s education system, from basic to tertiary levels, to ensure improved outcomes.
As part of this review, John Mahama outlined four key reforms he would implement for the Free SHS policy:
1. Dedicated Fund: Mahama pledged to create a dedicated fund to secure long-term financing for the Free SHS program.
2. Schools to Buy Their Own Food: Instead of relying on the Buffer Stock Company to supply food, Mr. Mahama proposed giving schools direct funding to purchase their own food supplies, increasing efficiency.
3. Completion of E-Block Schools: He criticized the NPP government for abandoning several E-Block school projects that were near completion under his administration. John Mahama promised to finish these projects to ease overcrowding and eliminate the double-track system.
4. Inclusion of Private Schools in Free SHS: Finally, Mr. Mahama assured private school owners that they would be included in the Free SHS program under an NDC government, allowing students greater access to education across all schools.
John Mahama’s proposals aim to enhance the Free SHS program and create a more equitable and effective education system in Ghana.
