John Dumelo Takes Dry-Season Farming Campaign Across Ghana to Boost Year-Round Food Supply

Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture and actor John Dumelo has embarked on a nationwide engagement with farmers as part of efforts to promote dry-season farming and strengthen Ghana’s food supply.

In a recent social media post, Dumelo said that over the past three days, he had travelled from the Oti Region through the Northern Region and into the Ahafo Region, near Ghana’s border with Côte d’Ivoire.

Acording to him, the mission is straightforward: to support farmers to venture into dry-season farming, with particular attention to tomatoes and other vegetables, so that Ghana can have a reliable supply of food throughout the year.

“The mission is simple, we are supporting farmers to go into dry season farming so we can have all year round supply of food items, especially tomatoes and other vegetables. It is possible.”

The initiative comes as Ghana continues to explore ways to increase local tomato production and reduce seasonal shortages.

Dumelo has previously announced preparations for large-scale dry-season tomato farming from December 2026 to June 2027, with solar-powered boreholes and irrigation inputs being provided to support farmers.

His latest field engagements highlight the growing focus on irrigation and year-round cultivation, particularly because tomato production has traditionally been heavily dependent on rainfall.

Ghanaian agriculture programmes have also recorded increased yields from supported dry-season tomato farmers through improved irrigation, training and farming practices.

For Dumelo, who has built a public profile both as an actor and an advocate for agriculture, the goal is to move beyond seasonal farming and create a system where farmers can continue producing even when the rains are over.

From Oti to the North and now Ahafo, John Dumelo says the message is clear: with the right support, Ghana can produce food all year round.
