Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has asserted that the party would have garnered only 20% of the votes in the 2024 presidential election had the approximately two million abstaining Ghanaians participated in the polls.
Boadu contended that these non-voters were largely disillusioned with the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration and would have likely voted against the NPP. He acknowledged that their decision to abstain inadvertently benefited the party’s electoral performance.
His remarks provide insight into the NPP’s assessment of the election results, in which its candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, secured 41.75% of the vote, while President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged victorious with 56.42%.
Boadu further attributed the NPP’s defeat to internal party dynamics, particularly the decision to permit government appointees to challenge sitting Members of Parliament in the primaries. According to him, this policy caused divisions, leading to some MPs withholding support for the party’s candidates, ultimately impacting the election outcome.
