Nigerian singer Joeboy has shared a personal experience to highlight the importance of being selective with advice.
In a recent interview, he recalled a time when he sought feedback on his song Sip before its release. However, he was discouraged from putting it out because it didn’t fit the style his fans were accustomed to.
“There was a time I called the person who handles my A&R and told him I wanted to switch my song. He asked if I was sure, and I said yes. I played a couple of songs, and they told me it wasn’t a club banger or high-tempo track. They asked, ‘Are you sure this is the direction you want to go? It’s not a love song, and people love you for your love songs.’”
Despite the skepticism, Joeboy decided to take the risk and release Sip. To his surprise, the song became one of his biggest hits, both locally and internationally.
“I told myself, ‘I’ll do it whether it works or not.’ And it worked beyond my expectations. Sip is one of my biggest songs.”
Reflecting on the experience, Joeboy emphasized that not all advice should be followed blindly.
“People often see things only from their own perspective. It doesn’t mean they have bad intentions—it’s just their understanding. If you stand in one place, you’ll see a ‘9,’ and from another angle, it’s a ‘6.’ They may not be giving bad advice, but it might not be the right advice for you.”
