Janet Jackson Humbly Accepts ICON Award: “I Don’t Consider Myself an Icon”

Janet Jackson, one of the most influential and trailblazing artists in music history, was honored with the ICON Award at the 2025 American Music Awards on Monday (May 26) at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas. But despite a career that spans over four decades—with 10 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits, multiple Grammy Awards, and an induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame—Jackson modestly distanced herself from the label.

“No disrespect in any way, I don’t consider myself an icon,” Jackson said as she stood on stage holding the very award that gave her that title. “My family, myself—our dream wasn’t ever to be famous. We weren’t raised like that. We always had a special love for music and dancing and singing, and fame came as a result of hard work and dedication.”

Born into the legendary Jackson family in Gary, Indiana, Janet is the youngest of ten siblings and grew up surrounded by music. She began her career as a child actress on shows like Good Times and Diff’rent Strokes, but quickly forged her own path in music. Her breakthrough album, Control (1986), redefined pop and R&B and established her as a powerhouse in her own right—separate from the towering shadow of her brother Michael Jackson. Over the years, she has used her music and performances to address social issues, empowerment, and identity, becoming a symbol of strength and resilience.

Reflecting on her journey, she told the audience, “My story, my family’s story—it’s truly an American story. This would have only happened in America. The one thing I hope for is that I’ve been an inspiration to others, to artists, to follow their dreams and succeed.”

Before her emotional speech, Jackson delivered a stunning performance. She kicked off with her 2001 hit “Someone to Call My Lover,” followed by the fierce and iconic title track “All For You.” Backed by a troupe of dynamic dancers and set against the glitz of erupting fountains, the Vegas stage came alive—fitting for an artist currently in the middle of her residency at Resorts World Theatre.

She ended the evening by expressing gratitude to her team, her fans, and those who have supported her decades-long career. With sincerity and grace, she left the crowd with a lasting message:
“Keep God in every part of your life, because that’s where He wants to be.”
