Jamie Carragher is not among the world’s best 2000 defenders – Sammy Kuffour slams the English defender

Former Bayern Munich and Ghana defender Sammy Kuffour has hit back at Jamie Carragher for downplaying the significance of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), insisting the former Liverpool player must apologise to Africans.

Carragher, while discussing Mohamed Salah’s Ballon d’Or credentials, suggested that AFCON was not a major tournament, comparing it to regional competitions like the Gold Cup and Asian Games.

His remarks sparked widespread backlash, with the Champions League winner the latest to slam the former defender.

“Jamie Carragher has to apologise to all African people because AFCON is not a normal tournament,” Kuffour said on Sporty FM.

“Africa has given us the best of the best. Africa has produced a Ballon d’Or winner.”

The former Ghana international did not hold back in his criticism, questioning Carragher’s footballing credentials.

“What has Jamie Carragher achieved? If he wasn’t born in Liverpool, he would not have had the chance to play for Liverpool,” Kuffour added.

“If we mention the best 2,000 defenders in the world, Jamie Carragher will not be part of them. He’s nothing. He just talks. He should be ashamed of himself.”

Despite Carragher clarifying that he did not mean to be disrespectful, his comments have drawn strong reactions, with many calling for greater respect for African football.
