The J.E. Mills Memorial Heritage Foundation has announced a series of activities to commemorate the 14th anniversary of the passing of former President John Evans Atta Mills, with a call on Ghanaians to reflect on his legacy of integrity, peace, democracy and dedicated public service.
The programme was unveiled at a press conference addressed by the Chairman of the Foundation, Alex Segbefia, who said this year’s commemoration is intended not only to honour the memory of the late President, who died in office on July 24, 2012, but also to preserve the values and principles that defined his leadership and continue to inspire national development.
Speaking at the launch, Mr. Segbefia said the selection of former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, as the guest speaker and former Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hanna Serwaa Tetteh, as chairperson of the memorial lecture reflects the Foundation’s commitment to preserving the legacy of President Atta Mills as a national figure whose ideals transcend partisan politics.
Mr. Segbefia explained that the J.E. Mills Memorial Heritage Foundation was incorporated on October 14, 2021, as an independent, non-profit and charitable organisation established to preserve the legacy of the late President. According to him, the Foundation promotes the ideals of peace, integrity, constitutional democracy and human development through public education and commemorative programmes.
As part of the anniversary activities, a memorial lecture will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. at the Great Hall Auditorium of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng will deliver the memorial lecture, while Hanna Serwaa Tetteh, currently the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), will chair the programme.
The Foundation also announced that a memorial service will be held on Friday, July 24, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. at the Methodist Church. The service is expected to bring together President John Dramani Mahama, government officials, political leaders, traditional authorities, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the J.E. Mills Memorial Heritage Foundation and other invited guests to honour the late President.
The commemorative activities will conclude on Saturday, July 25, 2026, with the President John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Walk at the University of Ghana, Accra.
Mr. Segbefia called on the media and the general public to participate in the activities, saying the commemoration provides an opportunity for Ghanaians to celebrate the life and enduring contributions of President Atta Mills to democracy, peace, national unity and good governance.
He expressed the hope that the annual observance would continue to inspire present and future generations to uphold the values of integrity, humility, patriotism and selfless service that distinguished the late President’s leadership.
