Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan, who attended the draw as part of Ghana’s delegation alongside GFA President Kurt Okraku and Otto Addo, didn’t mince words when reacting to Ghana’s draw in Washington DC on Friday afternoon on December 5.
“It’s a very tricky group. Everyone back home wants us to qualify so we will do our possible best to qualify. We are optimistic.” He said.
As Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 international goals and Africa’s top World Cup marksman (6 goals across three tournaments), his perspective carries weight.
At 40, Gyan’s post-retirement role as a GFA ambassador and vocal advocate for the Black Stars underscores his stake in their success. His words echo the high expectations in a football-mad nation where World Cup progression is non-negotiable, especially after Ghana’s heart-wrenching 2010 quarterfinal exit and more recent group-stage struggles in 2014 and 2022.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage draw unfolded at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., setting the stage for an expanded 48-team tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico where the Black Stars are making a record fifth time appearance.
