“It is a great initiative by CAF,” – Gyan on U15 Schools Championship

Asamoah Gyan, Ghana’s all-time top-scorer and a legend of African football, has endorsed  CAF’s U15 Schools Championship—the third edition of it is going to be held in Accra beginning today, Tuesday, April 21, 2025.

The inaugural CAF U-15 School Championship had brought together school teams from across the continent, a spectacle of raw talent and unbridled passion.

Gyan, who assisted in Draw for the 2025 CAF African Schools Football Championship said “this is not just a tournament—it is a glimpse into the future of African football, a future he wishes he’d had as a young boy.

“In our time, we didn’t get that opportunity,” Gyan reflected, his voice carrying the weight of nostalgia. “Our time, it was just P.E., and then we go back to the class.” Growing up in Ghana, Gyan’s path to stardom was forged through street football and sheer determination.

Organized platforms like the CAF U-15 School Championship were unheard of in his youth, where physical education classes offered little more than a fleeting chance to kick a ball before returning to textbooks.

Now, as a retired icon and ambassador for African football, Gyan sees the championship as a game-changer. The initiative, launched by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), aims to identify and nurture talent at the grassroots level, giving young players a structured pathway to shine.

Scouts from European and African clubs are in the sidelines and will monitoring the tournament’s potentials to unearth the next generation of stars.

“It is a great initiative by CAF,” Gyan said, his eyes fixed on a young midfielder weaving through defenders. “I support grassroots football.” His endorsement carries weight. Gyan, who scored 51 goals in 109 appearances for Ghana and dazzled at the 2010 World Cup, knows the grind of rising from humble beginnings.

He believes programs like this can bridge the gap for countless kids who, like him, once played barefoot on dusty pitches but lacked the infrastructure to take their talent further.

The Championship kick starts on April 21, 2025 at the University of Ghana’s Sports Stadium.
