“Issaka Amon Kotei Calls for Reform in MMDCE Selection Process to Curb Mismanagement”

Local Government Expert and Political Analyst Issaka Amon Kotei has expressed concern over the confusion surrounding the selection of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

According to him, the process has been marred by a perception among some assembly members that the exercise is an opportunity to enrich themselves, rather than a chance to make decisions in the best interest of their communities.

Speaking to Citizen Kofi Owusu on Ahotor FM, Mr Kotei emphasized the need to dispel the notion that selecting MMDCEs is about personal gain. “We must change the mindset that this process is a chance to distribute resources or benefits. This approach is counterproductive and has contributed significantly to the challenges we face today,” he said.

He further suggested that the authorities responsible for granting such functions to assembly members reconsider their approach. “At this stage, those who delegated this power should review their decision.

They might need to either withdraw the authority or send a high-level delegation to thoroughly evaluate the performance and ensure the right processes are being followed,” Kotei advised.

He stressed the importance of prioritizing integrity and accountability in the selection process to ensure competent leadership at the local government level.

Mr. Kotei has suggested that the chairman involve officials from the Public Services Commission or experienced civil servants in the selection process. According to him, this will ensure transparency and eliminate perceptions of bias. “Engaging these professionals will help maintain fairness and credibility in the selection process,” he stated.
