Tensions are running high in Ghana’s Ashaiman constituency, where frustrated youth feel marginalized despite their long-standing support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The youth, who have consistently backed the NDC since 1992, are accusing the party of disregarding their emotions and neglecting their needs.
The situation came to a head on Thursday when a group of irate youth stormed the office of constituency chairman Shaddad Umar Jallo, burning tires and shattering glass doors. Although party leaders managed to calm the situation, the youth remain adamant that they will no longer be placated with empty promises.
At the heart of the issue is the perceived lack of representation and opportunities for the people of Ashaiman. Despite President Mahama’s campaign promises to appoint someone from Ashaiman and improve the area’s deplorable road network, the youth feel that these commitments have not been fulfilled.
Presiding Member of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly Godwin Twumasi expressed the youth’s frustration, saying, “We have become a laughing stock. Our friends and neighbors in the NPP keep questioning our motivation for supporting the NDC when we are constantly left out during appointments.”
The youth are demanding recognition and opportunities, including employment in local factories. With tensions rising, there are fears that the situation may escalate if the party fails to address the youth’s concerns. The police have been deployed to maintain peace in the area.
