The Ministry of the Interior has lifted the ban on women riding motorbikes in the Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas in the Upper East Region, following advice from the National Security Council.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, the Ministry said the Interior Minister, acting on the advice of the National Security Council and by Executive Instrument, has approved the lifting of the restriction on women riding motorbikes in the affected areas.
Under the new directive, women are now permitted to ride motorbikes between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. every day. The Ministry said the measure forms part of ongoing efforts to manage the security situation while allowing some residents to resume activities under specified conditions.
However, the restriction on men riding motorbikes remains in force until further notice. The Ministry has urged all residents of Bawku and its environs to comply with the directive and cooperate with the security agencies to help maintain peace and security in the area.
