Interior Minister Adjusts Curfew Hours for Walewale Amid Rising Security Concerns

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has announced a revision of the curfew hours for Walewale and its surrounding areas in the Northeast Region, effective Thursday, February 27, 2025. The new curfew hours will now run from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM, replacing the previous schedule of 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM.

According to a statement issued by the Interior Ministry, the decision was made following advice from the Northeast Regional Security Council (NERSEC) as part of ongoing efforts to manage the security situation in the area.

The government has urged chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and residents to remain calm and seek peaceful solutions to their grievances. The statement further reiterated a total ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, and offensive weapons in the affected communities, warning that anyone found in possession of such items would face arrest and prosecution.

The curfew was initially imposed after a series of violent attacks along the Walewale-Wulugu stretch of the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway. Between February 11 and February 15, at least 13 travelers, including an infant, lost their lives in gun attacks on buses, with three buses set ablaze by unidentified assailants.

In response to the surge in violence, the Ministry of Interior took swift action by imposing movement restrictions in the affected areas, aiming to curb further attacks and restore order.

The government, in collaboration with security agencies, has assured residents of increased patrols and surveillance to prevent further violence. Authorities continue to engage stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the region’s security challenges.

The Minister of Interior Muntaka Mubarak has urged residents to cooperate with security forces, remain vigilant, and report any suspicious activities as efforts continue to ensure peace and stability in Walewale and its environs.
