A dramatic twist has unfolded in the saga of the missing Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers, as National Security operatives apprehend an Indian national suspected to be in possession of 40 of the over 1,300 missing containers. These containers, reportedly packed with essential equipment like cables, were meant to be cleared at Tema Port but have mysteriously disappeared.
Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor revealed that the containers were discovered at a warehouse in Kpone and have since been retrieved. Speaking to the media, he stated that investigations are underway to uncover the full extent of the situation and hold those responsible accountable.
“One person, an Indian man, has been picked up by National Security. He claims the containers were sold to him in 2024. Investigations are ongoing, and for now, we’ve secured the containers. At the appropriate time, we’ll involve the media to inspect them. The law will take its course,” Jinapor emphasized.
The shocking revelations emerged from an investigative report led by Prof. Innocent Senyo Acquah, chairman of the ECG investigative committee. The report disclosed that ECG initially reported 2,491 uncleared containers at Tema Port. However, an independent audit revealed only 1,134 containers, leaving 1,347 unaccounted for.
The discovery of the 40 containers at Kpone marks a significant breakthrough in the investigation. Prof. Acquah assured the public that efforts are ongoing to trace and retrieve the remaining containers, adding that those found culpable will face legal action.
Jinapor expressed confidence in the law enforcement agencies, commending their diligence in tracing the containers. He also warned against politicizing the issue, stressing that retrieving state properties is a matter of national interest.
“Let me make this clear: when we start prosecuting the culprits, no one should accuse us of witch-hunting. These are state properties, and we’ll use every legitimate means to recover them,” he said.
With intelligence pointing to additional locations, the Energy Ministry, National Security, and law enforcement agencies remain committed to ensuring justice and recovering all missing containers. The case has captured national attention, raising questions about how such a significant number of containers could vanish under ECG’s watch.
