Increased salaries should commensurate with productivity— labour expect

A labour expect Austin Gameh has called on public sector workers not to be excited for the increment of salaries but their work should match up to that of their salary.
He lamented over the fact that, it only in Ghana that whenever there is high inflation, Government increase salaries of public sector workers.
“It’s obvious that Government has certainly act as an employer might be behind the challenges they have with the management of the economy currently especially, when they are with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Labour has strategically have got what perhaps what somebody will say by miracle because at the normal circumstances, he couldn’t have been done.
So it is not a bad deal even though, Ghana generally we pay by inflation which is part of our DNA, hopefully in the future we should not be paying by that standard again.
We should be paying by productivity” Mr. Austin Gameh made the call in the wake of the Labour and Employment minister Ignatius Baffour Awuah engagement with Organised Labour and announced of a 23% increment in salaries but there is a concern to improve productivity.
The government has increased the minimum wage from ghc14.88ps to 18.15ps. Similarly the government granted a 23% salary increment to public sector workers for the year 2024.
“Agreement as a nation, we have with IMF making sure that we stay on course in achieving all the targets we have set for ourselves and also to get all the bench mark right. We have concluded that the national base pay will increase by 23% between 1st January 2024 to 30th June, 2024”.
Organised Labour represented by their Secretary General Dr. Yaw Baah and Executive Secretary of Civil and Local government Association of Ghana Isaac Bampo Addo after the meeting also had this to say.
“We are confident that when the time comes for Government to implement, there will be no hustle and would want to assure the organised Labour, this country is for all of us and that is why we have agreed with Government.
I would want to advise the Hon. Minister that we should continue to work together because we still have issues to resolve around wages.
Government upon Government, no matter what colour it is. They always complain no money and given all sort of reasons, and we have resolved that this must change going forward.
Next run of negotiations, government should have enough money to even give us double wages. These came to light on 3news and monitored by Ahotor news desk.
