Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, His Excellency Mohammed Baba Jamal Almed, has defended his decision to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency, ahead of the March 3, 2026 by-election.
The by-election was triggered by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Toure Naser.
Speaking after filing his nomination, Mr Jamal dismissed criticisms questioning why he would leave his diplomatic post in Nigeria to seek a parliamentary seat. He described such questions as being driven by “material thinking,” insisting that his decision is motivated purely by a desire to serve his people, not financial gain.
According to him, the conditions attached to his role as High Commissioner are “at least three times better” than what he would earn as a Member of Parliament, yet he has chosen to return home to serve his constituency.
Mr Jamal further clarified that contesting the election does not require him to resign from his position as High Commissioner. He explained that all that is required is to formally apply for leave, adding that he remains fully committed to resuming his diplomatic duties since his appointment remains intact.
He stressed that regardless of the outcome of the primaries and the by-election, his priority is to serve his community. He expressed confidence that securing the parliamentary seat would provide him with a broader platform to contribute more effectively to the development of Ayawaso East.
“I will serve my people in any capacity I am given,” he said, “but this opportunity will allow me to do even more.”
