Illegal Miners Nabbed as Blue Water Guards Launch Major Operation in Wassa Amenfi East

The Blue Water Guards, a specialized security unit dedicated to protecting Ghana’s natural resources and public lands, have intensified their operations in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality following reports of a surge in illegal mining activities. Intelligence gathered indicated that several unauthorized groups were engaging in galamsey operations, particularly around communities such as Wassa Asikuma and its surrounding areas, posing a serious threat to the environment and local livelihoods.

Under the leadership of the unit’s Second-in-Command, Mr. Alex Animah, the Blue Water Guards launched a decisive operation to clamp down on the illegal miners. Upon arrival at one of the active sites, the team observed frantic movements as operators attempted to conceal equipment and machinery. Heavy-duty machines were in full operation, further confirming the intelligence reports.

Without delay, the Blue Water Guards moved in swiftly and effectively. The team secured the entire area, identified key suspects, and arrested four individuals believed to be involved in the illegal mining operations. Several mobile phones and pumping machines were also confiscated as evidence and transported to the Wassa Akropong Police Station for further investigation. Additionally, the team disabled and destroyed unlicensed mining equipment to prevent future misuse.

Speaking after the operation, Mr. Alex Animah reaffirmed the unit’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the environment and preserving natural resources.

> “We will not tolerate the destruction of our environment or the exploitation of our natural resources,” he stated firmly. “Our actions today send a clear and powerful message — illegal mining will not be tolerated within the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality.”

The successful operation marks a significant step in the ongoing fight against illegal mining in the region. The Blue Water Guards’ swift action not only disrupted unlawful activities along roadsides and water bodies but also reinforced their dedication to protecting the Municipality’s ecosystem and Ghana’s environmental heritage.
