A total number of 31 ‘illegal miners’ who were dredging the Offin River, near Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Central Region have been arrested by a taskforce constituted by the Small Scale Miners Association.
The suspects, including Chinese nationals, have been sent to the Central Regional Police Command in Cape Coast.
The action by the taskforce is to complement the effort of the Operation Vanguard set up by government to clamp down on galamsey.
The commander of the taskforce, Brisie Andoh said their effort is aimed at ensuring that water bodies and lands are not destroyed by self-seeking individuals who do not have the interest of the nation at heart.
