“If We Can’t Grow Tomatoes, Then Something Is Wrong With Us” – GFL Boss Laments Food Import Dependence

TEMA, Ghana, 4th April: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has raised serious concerns over Ghana’s growing dependence on imported tomatoes, describing the situation as both worrying and unacceptable.

According to him, it is a national embarrassment that a country with vast arable land and a favourable climate continues to import basic food items like tomatoes from neighbouring countries.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, April 4, Mr. Koomson stated that while it may be understandable for Ghana to struggle with the manufacturing of complex products such as computers or vaccines, there is no justification for failing to produce something as basic as tomatoes.

“We may not be able to manufacture computers or vaccines for now, but if we cannot grow tomatoes, then there is something fundamentally wrong,” he stressed.

Abraham Koomson questioned why Ghana, blessed with fertile land and suitable weather conditions, still relies heavily on imports for food that can easily be cultivated locally.

Expressing frustration, he highlighted the irony of the situation, noting that Burkina Faso largely located in the Sahel with more challenging farming conditions is still able to produce and export tomatoes to Ghana.

He emphasized the urgent need for a renewed focus on agriculture, calling on authorities to invest in local farming, support farmers, and implement policies that will reduce the country’s dependence on food imports and strengthen food security.
