If the government had paid more attention to teachers’ needs, this strike could’ve been avoided – Former Madina MP
Alhaji Amadu Bukari Sorogho, former Member of Parliament for the Madina Constituency, is urging the government to address the concerns raised by striking teacher unions in Ghana. He emphasized that education plays a vital role in the development of any country and thus, all issues affecting teachers should be tackled promptly.
In an interview on Ahotor 92.3 FM, Alhaji Sorogho criticized the neglect of teachers by the NPP government, stating that they seem indifferent to their plight.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana (CCT-GH) have jointly called on the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take action to resolve issues impacting teachers’ ability to fulfill their duties effectively.
Rev. Isaac Owusu, President of GNAT, highlighted the government’s failure to renegotiate a collective agreement addressing various concerns, including allowances for teachers in underserved areas, entertainment allowances, and housing/rent allowances.
In response, Alhaji Sorogho expressed disappointment, suggesting that if the government had been more attentive to the needs of teachers, the strike action could have been avoided. He emphasized the importance of being a responsive government, especially in addressing crucial matters like education, which forms the foundation of national progress.
