The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 14.75% increase in electricity tariffs and a 4.02% hike in water tariffs.
These new tariffs are expected to take effect from May 3, 2025.
The Director of Research and Corporate Affairs at PURC, Dr. Eric Obutey,, attributed the steep increase in electricity tariffs to the country’s mounting energy sector debts.
Ghanaians woke up to the news last week of being asked to pay more for electricity and water.
The announcement was made in an official statement released by the PURC on Friday, April 11, indicating that the new rates will apply across all consumer categories, regardless of income level.
Dr Obutey confirmed the tariff increments in an interview with the media.
“If not for the debt, the increase wouldn’t have been this high,” Dr. Obutey explained.
Responding to questions about service reliability, Dr. Obutey clarified that the PURC regulates both planned and unplanned maintenance activities.
“For planned maintenance, we inform consumers in advance through radio and other platforms before any scheduled outages,” he said.
“Unplanned maintenance, on the other hand, is unforeseen and happens without prior warning—it’s beyond our control.”
Despite the upward adjustment, the PURC has assured the public of its commitment to transparency and minimizing service disruptions.
