Ibrahim Tanko returns to management after just one month parting with Accra Lions

Ibrahim Anyars Tanko has signed a two and half-year contract with Ghana Premier League side Medeama SC as the new head coach as reported earlier by this portal.

The Tarkwa based club confirmed the deal on their X account after reaching agreement with the former Accra Lions manager.

Medeama Sporting Club is pleased to confirm the appointment of Coach Ibrahim Tanko two-and- half year contract. The UEFA license A holder has completed formalities and replaces technical director Augustine Evans Adotey, who reverts to his original role,” club statement.

“The former Ghana International is one of the most exciting coaches and brings wealth of experience, standards of excellence, leadership qualities and character to the club. Nicknamed the ‘Bullet’, Tanko joins the Mauve and Yellow after leaving Premier League side Accra Lions where he served as a coach and technical advisor.

“The former Borussia Dortmund star is one of the experienced trainers in the country having worked in Japan’s J League and the Bundesliga. He was also an assistant coach of Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions as well as Ghana’s Black Meteors and Black Galaxies.”

Ibrahim Tanko left Premier League side Accra Lions after three seasons citing attention to “personal projects” as the reason for his decision to leave the struggling premier league club.

The former Black Galaxies coach had won just two games from sixteen premier league games leaving the Lions in the relegation zone  -a story which remarkably different from the 2023/2024 season where he led the club finish as the runners-up behind FC Samartex 1996.

The two-time Bundesliga winner comes as replacement to Nebojsa Kapor who declined contract renewal last December with the “Yellow and Mauve” outfits.

Tanko’s arrival comes at the right time to ease the workload on the club’s Technical Director, Evans Adotey who has since the departure of the Bosnian tactician been supervising all the Medeama’s games.

The “Bullet” as he is affectionately called takes over Medeama who have just one win in 2025 after five games in the premier league losing two and drawing equal number (1-0 win against Karela United, 1-1 draws Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC, 2-1 defeat to Berekum Chelsea and 1-0 defeat to Accra Lions) and occupying the 7th place on the table.

What has Tanko said after signing for Medeama?
You need discipline in the group to achieve what you want. You have to be disciplined, you have to work hard. I told them (the players), you are playing in one of the best clubs in Ghana and definitely you have to give your best and that is what we are going to do.

Tanko’s first assignment will be an away game to Legon Cities on Sunday, February 2 at 15:00GMT on the back of a four game winless streak.
