Ibrahim Tanko leaves Premier League side Accra Lions after three seasons

Ibrahim Tanko and Accra Lions have parted ways on mutual consent after three years of union, AhotorSports can report.

The decision follows the club’s horror campaign after picking just two points from sixteen games with seventeen points.

The current season has seen Ibrahim Tanko’s side fall off from their impressive accounts in the 2023/2024 season where they finished second to FC Samartex 1996 in the Ghana Premier League with 51 points and scored 37 goals over the term.

The former Black Stars assistant coach Ibrahim Tanko who joined in 2022 and guided them to Premiership status placing them 15th above Tamale City, King Faisal and Kotoku Royals in that season.

Tanko leaves his role handing over responsibilities to German trainer Rainer Kraft who returns to the club for a second spell.

Club statement reads: “Accra Lions Football Club announces that Ibrahim Tanko, the head coach of the club, has mutually agreed with the management to step aside and focus on pursuing other important projects.”

“Tanko, who has been an integral part of our club’s growth and vision, officially handed over his responsibilities to German trainer Rainer Kraft, marking a smooth transition of leadership.

 

What has Ibrahim Tanko said?

“I leave the role with immense pride, knowing that Accra Lions is more than just a club—it is family. While I am stepping away to focus on other projects, my bond with the team remains strong, and I will always be available to support the club in any way,” Tanko said.

Rainer Kraft will immediately begin his relegation fight against Bibiani Gold Stars on Sunday in the last game of the fitrst round of the Ghana Premier League on Sunday.
