I was expecting a reliable survey from Professor Smart Sarpong – Asante Otchere

Dr. Jonathan Asante Okyere, a Political Analyst and Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast has raised concerns about the validity of a recent survey indicating that 38.9% of voters prefer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as President over John Dramani Mahama.

Dr. Asante Okyere argues that the survey may not accurately represent the true sentiments of the electorate. The survey, conducted by Professor Smart Sarpong, Director of Research and Innovation at Kumasi Technical University, positions Dr. Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, as the leading candidate for the 2024 general elections with 38.9% support. In contrast, John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has 36.1% support.

The survey highlights that Dr. Bawumia is leading in regions such as Ahafo, Ashanti, Bono, Central, Eastern, North East, Western, and Western North. It also notes that other presidential candidates collectively garner around 3.6% support. Furthermore, 21.4% of prospective voters remain undecided as of the end of April 2024.

In the North East region, Dr. Bawumia enjoys the highest support, with 60% of voters favoring him. Conversely, in the Volta region, 75.7% of voters have pledged their support for Mahama.

The data for this baseline study was collected over 30 days, from April 1st to 30th, 2024.

Speaking on Ahotor FM‘s morning show ‘AdeKyee Mu Nsem‘ with host Citizen Kofi Owusu, Dr. Asante Okyere expressed his disappointment, expecting a more rigorous and reliable survey from Professor Smart Sarpong, given his expertise as a statistician. Dr. Asante Okyere described the survey as lacking substance and not reflective of the current national mood, suggesting that the political climate makes it particularly challenging for the NPP’s flagbearer.

He emphasized that the current situation in the country does not support the survey’s findings, questioning the methodology and interpretation of the data presented.
