President-elect John Dramani Mahama has expressed his heartfelt gratitude to God for granting him and his party a resounding victory in the recent general elections, surpassing even their most optimistic projections.
Speaking during the 31st All Night Service at the Sanctuary of Wind and Fire Assemblies of God Church in Tamale, Mr. Mahama reflected on the journey to victory, attributing the success entirely to divine intervention.
He acknowledged that while he had prayed and hoped for a win, God’s blessings exceeded all expectations.
“We are here to say thank you because what we wished for in our hearts, He (God) has fulfilled beyond our wildest expectations,” Mr. Mahama declared, his voice filled with emotion.
“When I prayed and called on Him, I was confident we would be victorious, but He did far more than I imagined.”
A Faith-Filled Prediction
The President-elect recounted an encounter with the media on election day after casting his vote. With a lighthearted tone, he shared how he confidently projected a win for his party, predicting at least 150 parliamentary seats. However, God’s plans were much greater.
“That day, after I cast my vote, all the media had their microphones and cameras pointed at me. One of the journalists asked, ‘Now that you’ve voted, what do you think? Are you going to win the elections?’ I said, ‘Yes, I believe we will win.’ Then he asked about the parliamentary results, and I replied, ‘Well, I project we will secure more than 150 seats.’”
With a laughter, John Mahama continued, “But God said, ‘You’re speaking nonsense! I will give you more than 150 seats.’ And here we are today with over 180 seats!” His remarks were met with laughter and applause from the congregation.
A Welcome Challenge
While celebrating the overwhelming victory, John Mahama acknowledged a unique dilemma stemming from their parliamentary success. During his campaign, he promised to reduce the size of government by appointing no more than 60 ministers to cut costs and boost other sectors.
However, the unexpected number of parliamentary seats has brought new challenges.
“Now, I have so many MPs, I don’t know what to do with all of them,” he said humorously. “And you know the funny thing? Everywhere I campaigned, the paramount chiefs would say, ‘We are voting for you, but when we do, you must make our son a minister.’”
He explained that with over 180 parliamentary seats, accommodating the requests of chiefs while sticking to his 60-minister promise would be no easy task.
Trusting in God’s Guidance
Despite these challenges, John Mahama expressed unwavering faith in God to provide direction.
“We won in over 180 constituencies. If I appoint just 60 ministers, imagine the balance left,” he said, smiling. “But I trust God will guide us and make things work out in His own perfect time.”
