Ghanaian Businessman Nana Appiah Mensah, also known as NAM 1 and the CEO of the now-defunct Menz Gold has requested additional time from the court to secure new legal representation.
He is currently facing 37 charges and was informed on July 11th, 2024, that he needed to begin his defence. On the same day, NAM 1 submitted a request for a stay of proceedings while he appealed a High Court ruling related to his companies, Menzgold Ghana Limited and Brew Marketing Consult.
However, on December 5, the High Court denied his request and ordered him to proceed with his defence as directed in July. When the case was called on Tuesday, December 17, NAM 1 appeared without his lawyers, who are led by Kwame Boafo Akuffo.
Upon questioning by the Court about their absence, NAM 1 asked for permission to speak without his legal team, explaining, “My lawyer and I have a fundamental disagreement that hinders our approach to the defence.” He further elaborated, “Therefore, I respectfully request a reasonable amount of time, as you see fit, to seek and retain new counsel.
This will allow me to present my defence and establish my innocence before this honourable court, the Republic, and the wider community.”
