Ghanaian entertainment commentator and social media personality, Zhikay Ike Junior, has stirred conversation online after questioning the genre authenticity of a trending song by gospel artiste Sammy Young.
Taking to his Facebook page, Zhikay shared:
“I have received several video links from people about this video trending on TikTok. I don’t have intentions of looking down on anyone’s creative ability. I just asked whether the song is a gospel song or not! Sammy Young, I don’t get the reason and motivation for this video.”
The post, which has since sparked heated debates among gospel lovers and creatives alike, touches on what many are calling the “blurring lines” between gospel music and secular trends. Sammy Young’s viral hit—yet to be officially titled—has taken over TikTok with thousands of users dancing, lip-syncing, and creating skits to the upbeat track. However, its message and accompanying visuals have left some, like Zhikay, questioning its gospel credentials.
While Zhikay insists he’s not discrediting Sammy Young’s talent, fans of the singer argue that gospel music is evolving and shouldn’t be boxed into traditional formats. Others, however, agree with Zhikay’s concern, stating that the core of gospel should remain centered on ministry, not virality.
Sammy Young has publicly responded to the statement.

As the debate continues to trend, one thing is clear: the gospel music space is evolving, and not everyone is on the same page about what that should look—or sound—like.
Is Sammy Young pushing boundaries or crossing them? The gospel community will surely be watching closely.
