Otto Addo, head coach of the Ghana Black Stars has held a press conference ahead of the team’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Chad, scheduled for today, March 21, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium.
During the presser, Addo shared insights into his team’s preparations, mindset, and expectations for the crucial match.
He emphasized that despite Chad not being considered a top-tier team, the game would be challenging, stating, “I know that Chad is not a top team, but believe me, it’s not going to be easy.
“And we need all the support we can get.” Addo expressed gratitude for the backing from Ghanaian fans, the government, and former players, noting how their support has boosted the team’s morale following a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
He also apologized for the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for AFCON 2025, promising a stronger showing in the World Cup qualifiers.
Addo highlighted the improved condition of the pitch at the Accra Sports Stadium, saying, “I’m very, very happy that the pitch looks much, much better. This is, for me, the most important thing.”
He believes this will aid Ghana’s style of play, which he described as possession-based and attacking. With three wins in four World Cup qualifying matches so far, Addo expressed confidence, stating, “Now we have everything in our own hands, which is very important, very good for us, and this is really positive. I am very sure we will deliver [against Chad].”
He also acknowledged the team’s motivation to rebound from recent setbacks, crediting the addition of experienced staff like Winfred Schaefer, an AFCON winner, and a psychologist to the coaching setup.
Addo humbly declined to call himself a World Cup qualification expert, saying, “I’m not, I can’t call myself [an] expert… I always want to win,” but reiterated his belief in the team’s ability to secure a positive result.
The Black Stars, currently third in Group I with nine points, are aiming for a fifth World Cup appearance, and Addo stressed the importance of fan support and player focus to achieve that goal in this match and beyond.
The game is scheduled for tonight at 19:00GMT.
