“I.E.S Calls for Education Localization to Address National Needs”

Patrick Dankwah, Deputy Director of the Institute of Educational Studies, has proposed a localized approach to education to better align with Ghana’s national needs and advance its educational direction.

Ghana’s education system is overseen by the Ministry of Education and comprises various levels: Primary School, Junior Secondary School, Senior Secondary School, and Higher Education. Each level has its curriculum and purpose.

Primary education spans 6 years, referred to as “Primary 1” through “Primary 6.” Subsequently, students progress to Junior Secondary School (JSS) for 3 years, known as “JSS 1” to “JSS 3.” Many JSS institutions are privately owned due to deficiencies in government-owned facilities.

The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) assesses students’ knowledge after the 9-year basic education program. It covers subjects such as Mathematics, General Science, English, Social Studies, and others.

Upon passing the BECE, students proceed to Senior Secondary School (SSS) for 3 years (SSS 1 to SSS 3). The SSS curriculum differs from basic education and includes subjects like Science, Mathematics, English, and Social Studies, along with elective courses.

Mr. Dankwah emphasized the importance of localizing education to address specific challenges, stating that tailored approaches can yield maximum benefits.
