“I Didn’t Know My Father Was Wealthy; I Thought My Life Was Normal” – DJ Cuppy

Florence Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy, has opened up about how her perspective on her upbringing has evolved over time.

The Nigerian DJ and daughter of billionaire businessman Femi Otedola shared that, growing up, she never had to worry about basic needs, and her lifestyle felt completely normal to her. However, as she got older, she realized that what she had taken for granted was a privilege many people could only dream of.

Reflecting on her journey, she wrote on X (formerly Twitter):

“Growing up, I didn’t fully realize just how privileged I was. I never had to worry about anything. Thank God I see it now. What felt normal to me is something someone else is praying for. Gratitude changes everything.”

Her post sparked discussions online, with some praising her self-awareness and others pointing out the vast gap between privilege and the daily struggles of many.

Cuppy isn’t the only Nigerian celebrity who was unaware of their privileged background. Similarly, music star David Adeleke, better known as Davido, once admitted that he didn’t realize his family was wealthy until he was 13.

Speaking on the Earn Your Leisure podcast, Davido shared how his father, despite being a billionaire, lived modestly and even drove a Honda Accord.

It wasn’t until a house explosion forced his family to move that he discovered his father had secretly built a massive home elsewhere. That moment, he said, was when he finally grasped the extent of his family’s wealth.
