In recent times, it has come to the attention of the good people of Ghana that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, has made disparaging remarks about the founder and leader of Ghana’s independence struggle, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Even more troubling, NAPO, who served as the Energy Minister and a former Education Minister before he was named as the Running Mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumiar the current leader of the NPP and Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, has refused to retract his statements, insisting that he merely spoke the truth and accusing Ghanaians of misconstruing his words. This article seeks to appeal to the citizens of Ghana to reject such denigration and to remind ourselves of the profound contributions Dr. Nkrumah made to our nation.
Dr. Kwame Nkrumah: A Legacy of Achievement
Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is not merely a figure in Ghana’s history; he is the embodiment of the country’s aspirations and triumphs. His leadership was instrumental in securing Ghana’s independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957, making Ghana the first sub-Saharan African country to achieve this milestone. This was not just a victory for Ghana but a beacon of hope for the entire continent, inspiring numerous other African nations in their quests for independence.
Dr. Nkrumah’s vision extended far beyond political freedom. He spearheaded numerous development projects that laid the foundation for Ghana’s socio-economic progress. Among his notable achievements are:
- The Akosombo Dam: Completed in 1965, this massive infrastructure project created Lake Volta, one of the largest artificial lakes in the world. The dam has been a crucial source of hydroelectric power, contributing significantly to Ghana’s energy supply and industrial development.
- Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST): Founded in 1952, KNUST has been a leading institution for higher education and research in West Africa. It has produced many of the nation’s top scientists, engineers, and leaders, including Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh himself, highlighting the irony of his disparaging remarks.
- Industrialization and Economic Diversification: Dr. Nkrumah’s administration focused on building factories and industries to diversify the economy and reduce reliance on cocoa exports. Key projects included the Tema Oil Refinery and the establishment of numerous state-owned enterprises.
- Healthcare and Education: Nkrumah’s government built hospitals, clinics, and schools across the country, improving access to healthcare and education for all Ghanaians. The introduction of free primary education was a transformative policy that greatly increased literacy rates.
- Pan-Africanism: Dr. Nkrumah was a staunch advocate for the unity and solidarity of African nations. His efforts in promoting Pan-Africanism led to the establishment of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU), fostering cooperation and collective progress across the continent.
Rejecting Disrespect Towards Our National Heroes
Given these immense contributions, it is disheartening to witness any individual, especially one who seeks political office, disparage Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Such actions are not only disrespectful but also detrimental to our national unity and pride. The situation is further exacerbated by NAPO’s refusal to retract his statements and his insistence that his words have been misconstrued. This adds salt to the injury and demonstrates a lack of respect for the sentiments of Ghanaians. The upcoming elections on December 7 present an opportunity for the people of Ghana to express their discontent with such behavior through the ballot box.
Political figures should recognize that insulting the country’s legends undermines the very foundation of our national identity and pride. It sends a message that the sacrifices made by our heroes are not valued, making the country vulnerable to external threats and diminishing the spirit of patriotism among its citizens.
Protecting the Names of Our Legends
It is imperative for the people of Ghana to protect, project, promote, and preserve the names and legacies of our national heroes. By doing so, we not only honor their memory but also instill a sense of pride and responsibility in future generations. Celebrating the achievements of Dr. Nkrumah and other national heroes fosters a spirit of unity and resilience, essential for national development and sovereignty.
Protecting our legends’ legacies brings numerous benefits, including enhanced national cohesion, increased tourism, and a strengthened national identity. It also sets a positive example for the youth, encouraging them to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s progress.
The Benefits of Protecting Our Legends
- National Unity: Honoring our heroes fosters a sense of national unity and shared purpose. It reminds us of our common history and the values that bind us together as a nation.
- Tourism: Celebrating our historical figures can attract tourists interested in learning about Ghana’s rich history and heritage. Monuments, museums, and educational programs dedicated to Dr. Nkrumah and other leaders can become significant attractions.
- National Identity: Acknowledging and celebrating our heroes strengthens our national identity. It helps us remember where we came from and inspires us to strive for the ideals they fought for.
- Youth Inspiration: Highlighting the achievements of our national heroes serves as an inspiration for the youth. It encourages them to pursue excellence and contribute positively to society, knowing that they are following in the footsteps of great leaders.
A Call to Action
In light of the above, I urge all Ghanaians to critically evaluate the actions and words of their political leaders. Reject those who seek to tarnish the legacy of our national heroes for political gain. Instead, support leaders who respect and uphold the values and contributions of figures like Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
As we approach the elections, let us remember the sacrifices made by our forebears and choose leaders who embody their vision for a prosperous and united Ghana. By doing so, we honor their memory and ensure that Ghana remains a nation worth sacrificing for.
In conclusion, let us all come together to safeguard the legacies of our national heroes, reject those who seek to undermine them, and strive towards a future that reflects the ideals and aspirations of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. By protecting the names of our legends, we preserve the soul of our nation and pave the way for a brighter future for all Ghanaians.
