In recent times, it has come to the attention of the good people of Ghana that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, has made disparaging remarks about the founder and leader of Ghana’s independence struggle, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Even more troubling, NAPO, who served as the Energy Minister and a former Education Minister before he was named as the Running Mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumiar the current leader of the NPP and Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, has refused to retract his statements, insisting that he merely spoke the truth and accusing Ghanaians of misconstruing his words. This article seeks to appeal to the citizens of Ghana to reject such denigration and to remind ourselves of the profound contributions Dr. Nkrumah made to our nation.
Dr. Kwame Nkrumah: A Legacy of Achievement
Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is not merely a figure in Ghana’s history; he is the embodiment of the country’s aspirations and triumphs. His leadership was instrumental in securing Ghana’s independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957, making Ghana the first sub-Saharan African country to achieve this milestone. This was not just a victory for Ghana but a beacon of hope for the entire continent, inspiring numerous other African nations in their quests for independence.
Dr. Nkrumah’s vision extended far beyond political freedom. He spearheaded numerous development projects that laid the foundation for Ghana’s socio-economic progress. Among his notable achievements are:

The upcoming elections on December 7 present an opportunity for the people of Ghana to express their discontent with such behavior through the ballot box.
Political figures should recognize that insulting the country’s legends undermines the very foundation of our national identity and pride. It sends a message that the sacrifices made by our heroes are not valued, making the country vulnerable to external threats and diminishing the spirit of patriotism among its citizens.
Protecting the Names of Our Legends
It is imperative for the people of Ghana to protect, project, promote, and preserve the names and legacies of our national heroes. By doing so, we not only honor their memory but also instill a sense of pride and responsibility in future generations. Celebrating the achievements of Dr. Nkrumah and other national heroes fosters a spirit of unity and resilience, essential for national development and sovereignty.
