The Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Hon. Isaac Adongo, has strongly criticized the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he describes as their failure to take responsibility for Ghana’s current economic struggles.
Reacting to the NPP’s recent press conference on the state of the economy, Adongo accused the party of attempting to mislead the public instead of acknowledging the damage caused by their administration.
Hon. Adongo dismissed the NPP’s press conference as an irrelevant distraction to the National Economic Dialogue 2025, where experts and policymakers were discussing solutions to Ghana’s economic crisis.
“At the time Amin Anta was holding a press conference today, the people of Ghana who truly care about this country were busy discussing how to clear the mess they left behind. We were focused on finding solutions to the wreckage and recklessness—on getting the economy out of the ICU. Yet, the very people who caused this disaster are busy holding press conferences.”
He expressed disbelief at the frequency of the NPP’s public statements, questioning their purpose when Ghanaians have already rejected their governance.
“I am not surprised; even when they were in government, they were holding endless press conferences. I hear they’ve done about 50 of them already. But what exactly is their story? Do they think the people who voted them out and gave them just 38% of the vote do not know what they did? Who are they trying to convince? Ghanaians know their story!”
Hon. Isaac Adongo emphasized that the country is still suffering from the effects of the NPP’s economic mismanagement, particularly their debt strategy, which he claims drove even the most vulnerable into hardship.
“These are the people whose debt management strategy forced even the aged onto the streets. Or did they not see them? Didn’t they see elderly people demonstrating? These people, they don’t fear God! How can you push someone like Sofia Akuffo, a former Chief Justice, out of her home to plead for fairness after serving this country for years? People have died because they can’t afford medication!”
The lawmaker also lamented the destruction of Ghana’s once-thriving financial sector, blaming the NPP for collapsing key institutions that sustained the economy.
“The financial sector they inherited was a complete value chain, from banking to finance houses, savings and loans, and microfinance. But they destroyed everything, leaving only the banks standing on one leg. And even that leg is limping. Instead of helping, they added GH₵18 billion in losses to an already struggling banking sector. Eighteen billion in losses! Or are they not in this country?”
Hon. Issac Adongo’s remarks highlight the deep divide between the ruling government and the opposition on the causes and solutions to Ghana’s economic crisis.
The Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central Hon. Isaac Adongo emphasied that as the National Economic Dialogue 2025 continues, the focus remains on charting a path forward, the one that requires fixing the wreckage left behind by the NPP.
