Hon Cletus Avoka shares a detailed analysis of the facts of the Bawku crisis.

Hon. Cletus Apul Avoka, Member of Parliament for the Zebilla constituency, has presented a thorough analysis of the historical and legal complexities behind the ongoing crisis in Bawku, a town in Ghana’s Upper East Region.

Avoka expressed concern over the widespread misinformation, with many commentators lacking a deep understanding of the conflict’s roots and failing to acknowledge the legal processes that have shaped the crisis.

He explained that Bawku is primarily inhabited by the Kusasi people, while the Mamprusi presence in the region dates back to the trans-Saharan trade era.

Avoka pointed out that a recent appeals court decision had revoked a warrant related to the issue, after which he cautioned key national security figures, including the National Security Minister, the National Security Coordinator, and the Attorney General.

Avoka advised against sending a particular individual back to Bawku, warning it could trigger violence. However, his counsel went unheeded, leading to renewed fears of bloodshed in the region.

The MP stressed that resolving the Bawku crisis requires a commitment to historical truth, legal fairness, and a sensitivity to the delicate social dynamics within the area.
