High Court Sentences Footballer Richard Appiah to Life Imprisonment in Abesim Murders Case

The High Court in Accra has sentenced Richard Appiah to life imprisonment following his conviction for the murder of two children in Abesim in the Bono Region.

The sentence was handed down after a seven-member jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict on two counts of murder. The victims, aged 12 and 15, were killed in 2021 in a case that sent shockwaves through the Abesim community and sparked nationwide concern.

Appiah, described during proceedings as both a footballer and a draughtsman, had been on trial since 2022. The case was presided over by Justice Ruby Aryeetey, who delivered the life sentence in accordance with Ghanaian law.

The trial attracted sustained public interest due to the gravity of the offences and the profound impact on the local community. The verdict brings closure to a case that has remained one of the most widely discussed criminal proceedings in recent years.
