Heartstopper stars Kit Connor and Joe Locke have stressed the enduring importance of telling stories that promote acceptance, inclusion and understanding, saying productions like the hit series remain as relevant as ever.
Speaking in a recent interview, the actors said creating films and television programmes like Heartstopper is essential because they allow young people to see themselves represented on screen while encouraging meaningful conversations about identity, friendship and love.
Connor said the impact of the series extends beyond entertainment, noting that many viewers have shared how the show helped them feel understood, accepted and less alone. Locke agreed, adding that although representation in the entertainment industry has improved, there is still a need for authentic stories that reflect the experiences of diverse communities.
The actors also acknowledged the overwhelming support Heartstopper has received since its debut, saying the global response from fans demonstrates the continued demand for positive and inclusive storytelling.
Based on the graphic novels by Alice Oseman, Heartstopper has become one of Netflix’s most successful coming-of-age dramas. The series has earned widespread praise for its sensitive portrayal of teenage relationships, mental health and self-discovery.
Connor and Locke said they hope future productions will continue to champion diversity and inspire audiences, insisting that stories like Heartstopper will “forever be important” in helping people feel seen, valued and understood.
