Hearts of Oak Star Hussein Mohammed Banned for Three Games Over Referee Confrontation in Controversial Super Clash Defeat

Accra Hearts of Oak midfielder Hussein Mohammed has been suspended for three matches by the Ghana Football Association’s Disciplinary Committee after being found guilty of unsporting behaviour towards match officials.

The incident occurred following Hearts of Oak’s 1-0 defeat to arch-rivals Asante Kotoko in a heated Ghana Premier League Super Clash at the Accra Sports Stadium on November 9, 2025.

The decisive goal came just before halftime when referee Reginald Collins Amoah awarded a penalty to Kotoko following a challenge by Hearts defender Amankwah Baafi on Peter Amidu Acquah.

Guinean forward Morifing Donzo calmly converted from the spot, sealing the win despite Hearts’ strong second-half pressure, including a late stoppage-time effort from Mawuli Wayo that was disallowed for offside after consultation with the assistant referees.

Mohammed confronted the referee in frustration after the final whistle, leading to charges under the GFA Disciplinary Code. The committee’s ruling, announced on December 15, 2025, also included a warning to the player.

Following an investigation, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) charged both the club and Mohammed on November 10, 2025, citing breaches of Articles 12(1)(k), 16(2)(b), and 34(6)(d) of the GFA Disciplinary Code, which prohibit assaulting or threatening match officials and failing to control players and supporters.

In response, Hearts of Oak issued a statement condemning the incidents and initiating internal disciplinary measures, while Mohammed posted a personal apology on social media, expressing remorse to the GFA, the referee, his teammates, the club’s passionate fans, and the football community.

He acknowledged that his emotions got the better of him but pledged to learn from the mistake and uphold professionalism moving forward.

Hearts of Oak midfielder Hussein Mohammed apologizes to referee Collins and the Ghana Football Association for his violent behavior during the Super Clash.

As a result, Mohammed will miss upcoming fixtures against teams such as Aduana FC, FC Samartex, and Medeama SC. This decision follows earlier charges against both the player and the club for post-match misconduct, during which Mohammed had issued a public apology for his actions.

Separately, Hearts of Oak were fined GHS 10,000, payable within 14 days for supporter misconduct involving objects thrown onto the pitch during the same encounter.
