In the Ghana Premier League encounter that took place over the weekend just before the highly anticipated Super Clash, Kpando-based side Heart of Lions delivered a commanding performance by defeating prominent title contenders Asante Kotoko with a convincing 3-1 scoreline at the Kpando Sports Stadium.
The home team took the lead in the 35th minute when Seedorf Asante found the back of the net, putting Heart of Lions ahead. Just before halftime, Fawzi Ali capitalized on the momentum to double the advantage in first-half stoppage time at 45+2, sending the hosts into the break with a comfortable 2-0 cushion.
Asante Kotoko managed to pull one goal back from the penalty spot through Samba O’niel in the 58th minute, briefly reigniting hopes of a comeback for the visiting Porcupine Warriors. However, Heart of Lions sealed the victory in the 72nd minute as Michael Ephson restored the two-goal margin, completing the 3-1 triumph.
This result marks the fourth league defeat of the season for Asante Kotoko, and notably, all of their losses have come on the road, highlighting ongoing struggles away from home. It also stands as their heaviest defeat so far in the current campaign, matching the 3-1 reverse they suffered away to Vision FC back in June 2025.
Following this setback, the Porcupine Warriors find themselves temporarily positioned in third place on the league table, though that standing remains subject to change as the remaining fixtures from the weekend are completed and points are finalized across the board.
The defeat represents a significant blow to Asante Kotoko’s title aspirations, handing valuable momentum to Heart of Lions while raising questions about the Porcupines’ consistency on their travels.
