The Ekumfi District Health Director, Dr. Regina Ahunu-Armah, has expressed deep concern over the increasing cases of HIV/AIDS and teenage pregnancy in the district, describing the situation as alarming and requiring urgent intervention.
She made this known during the Ekumfi District Health Directorate’s 2025 Annual Performance Review held at the Methodist Church at Ekumfi Esuahyia on Friday, February 13, 2026. The review was held under the theme: “Reboot, Recenter, Drive Universal Health Coverage Forward.”
According to Dr. Ahunu-Armah, although the district recorded an impressive performance score of 4.3 out of 5 in the annual assessment—reflecting the dedication and hard work of health professionals—the increasing prevalence of teenage pregnancy and HIV/AIDS continues to pose a major public health threat.
She noted that despite the efforts of health workers, the rising cases of HIV/AIDS and teenage pregnancy could undermine the gains made in healthcare delivery across the district.
Dr. Ahunu-Armah further highlighted serious infrastructural and logistical challenges confronting the health sector in Ekumfi. She disclosed that several communities lack adequate health facility structures and essential equipment, making healthcare delivery difficult.
She also revealed that the district currently has only one doctor serving the entire population, supported by a limited number of nurses across hospitals, clinics, and CHPS compounds.
Dr. Ahunu-Armah therefore appealed to the government and relevant stakeholders to urgently support the district with improved health infrastructure, logistics, and additional medical personnel to enhance service delivery.
Meanwhile, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ekumfi, Hon. Ismeal Nana Asamoah, who attended the programme, pledged his commitment to improving conditions for health workers in the district. He assured that he would work tirelessly to make Ekumfi a more attractive and comfortable place for nurses and other health staff.
He also appealed to nurses posted to the district to avoid seeking transfers, urging them to remain and support the district’s efforts to improve healthcare delivery.
The DCE further called on the government to prioritize the construction of a District Hospital for Ekumfi, stressing that such a facility would greatly enhance healthcare services and benefit surrounding communities.
In a related address, the Nyimfahen of Ekumfi Arkra advised residents to adopt healthier lifestyles by engaging in regular exercise, eating balanced diets, and avoiding substance abuse.
He emphasized that good health is vital for survival and questioned how lives could be saved without proper healthcare infrastructure. He encouraged residents to educate themselves on health-related issues and take personal responsibility for their well-being.
