The Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has sharply criticized those who argue that the concept of a 24-hour economy is unfeasible for Ghana.
Speaking passionately on the matter, he reaffirmed his commitment, along with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to making the 24-hour economy a reality.
He emphasized that this ambitious plan is not only possible but also necessary for the country’s economic transformation.
He went on to reveal that the NDC, when elected to power, would ensure that the implementation of the 24-hour economy is backed by a comprehensive Legislative Instrument (LI).
Haruna Iddrisu explained that a 24-hour economy would significantly boost productivity, enhance job creation, and improve Ghana’s competitiveness on the global stage.
According to him, the idea is rooted in maximizing the country’s potential by ensuring that key sectors such as industry, healthcare, transportation, and services operate round the clock.
He noted that many modern economies around the world have successfully adopted this model to accelerate growth and improve the standard of living for their citizens.
“The naysayers lack vision,” Haruna remarked. “Ghana needs bold, forward-thinking solutions to unlock the next phase of its development, and the 24-hour economy is a crucial step in that direction.
We cannot afford to limit our economic activity to daylight hours alone while other nations are moving ahead by maximizing time and resources.”
He went on to reveal that the NDC, when elected to power, would ensure that the implementation of the 24-hour economy is backed by a comprehensive Legislative Instrument (LI).
This legislation, he said, would provide the necessary framework to support the seamless operation of businesses and services across all sectors throughout the day and night.
The proposed LI would include measures to safeguard workers’ rights, regulate shift systems, and ensure the safety and security of employees, particularly those working at night.
Haruna also addressed concerns regarding infrastructure and energy, two critical factors in enabling a 24-hour economy. He assured that the NDC has a detailed plan to modernize infrastructure, including transportation networks and energy supply, to meet the demands of a round-the-clock economy.
“A stable and efficient energy sector is key, and we are committed to resolving the energy challenges that have hindered Ghana’s progress in the past,” he added.
In addition to boosting economic growth, Haruna Iddrisu argued that the 24-hour economy would provide a solution to the country’s growing unemployment rate, particularly among the youth.
By creating more shifts, the model would open up new job opportunities in various sectors, allowing more Ghanaians to participate in the workforce and reduce the strain on limited job openings.
