Halt negotiations to privatize ECG – PUWU tells government

The Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU) of Ghana has expressed strong opposition to the government’s plans to privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). According to PUWU, privatization would harm workers and the country as a whole.

Concerns Raised by PUWU:

– Job Security: PUWU fears that privatization could lead to job losses and compromise workers’ rights.
– Increased Electricity Costs: The union believes that privatization would result in higher electricity costs for consumers.
– Impact on National Development: PUWU argues that privatizing ECG could hinder Ghana’s economic growth and development.

PUWU’s Relationship with ECG:

PUWU has a history of working with ECG, having signed collective agreements with the company in the past. In 2021, the union negotiated a collective agreement with ECG, which covered issues such as worker benefits and working conditions.

Government’s Proposal:

The government’s proposal to privatize ECG has sparked controversy, with many stakeholders expressing concerns about its potential impact on the country’s economy and citizens. However, the government may argue that privatization could bring in much-needed investment and expertise to improve ECG’s efficiency and services.
