Minister of State for Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has clarified that the construction of the Hajj Village is being fully funded by the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) and does not involve any taxpayer money.
In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the minister addressed misconceptions about the project’s funding, stating:
“FACT: The Hajj Village is primarily an airport terminal building for check-in and pilgrim facilitation owned and being built by the Ghana Airport Company. Not a pesewa of taxpayers’ money involved.”
The Hajj Village, currently under development by the GACL, is a specialized facility aimed at enhancing the travel experience for Ghanaian pilgrims journeying to Mecca. Designed as a dedicated terminal, the facility will streamline check-in and processing procedures for pilgrims, reducing congestion and ensuring a more efficient travel process.
At the sod-cutting ceremony held on Friday, February 28, President John Dramani Mahama underscored the significance of the project. He emphasized his administration’s dedication to improving pilgrimage logistics for Ghanaian Muslims, highlighting the Hajj Village as a critical step in that direction.
During the event, President Mahama also announced plans to facilitate the airlifting of 5,000 pilgrims to Mecca this year. He urged prospective pilgrims to adhere to the March 13 payment deadline and disclosed a pre-financing arrangement with a local bank to cover the costs of accommodation, transportation, and other essential services for the journey.
The Hajj Village is expected to significantly improve the pilgrimage process, offering better facilities and a seamless travel experience. This initiative reflects the government’s broader commitment to supporting the spiritual and logistical needs of Ghanaian Muslims embarking on the sacred journey to Mecca.
