Renowned gynecologist Dr. Yaw Sarfo has raised serious concerns about the rising trend of alcohol consumption among women of reproductive age, warning of its devastating impact on unborn children.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Sarfo emphasized that alcohol consumption during pregnancy can lead to severe complications, including birth defects, developmental delays, and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS).
He explained that alcohol easily crosses the placenta, directly affecting fetal development and increasing the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, and long-term cognitive impairments.
Dr. Sarfo urged women who are pregnant or planning to conceive to completely avoid alcohol to protect their babies from irreversible health issues.
He also called on healthcare professionals, policymakers, and community leaders to intensify public education on the dangers of prenatal alcohol exposure.
