Gyakye Quayson acquitted and discharged by High Court

James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament for Assin North, has been acquitted and discharged by the High Court after facing charges related to his dual citizenship status.

The decision, which was handed down on April 9, 2025, follows a legal battle that centered around allegations that Quayson held dual citizenship when he filed to contest in the 2020 parliamentary elections, a move which the prosecution argued violated the Constitution of Ghana.

Quayson, who had previously denied the charges and maintained that he had renounced his Canadian citizenship before filing his candidacy, expressed relief after the ruling.

The acquittal and discharge by the High Court have put an end to the legal uncertainties surrounding Quayson’s parliamentary seat, allowing him to continue with his duties as a Member of Parliament without further hindrance.
