Fresh gunfire has broken out in Wechiau, the capital of the Wa West District in the Upper West Region, leaving another innocent resident injured as renewed communal clashes continue to escalate insecurity in the area.
A young man was struck by a stray bullet on Friday, July 31, 2026, during an exchange of gunfire between feuding groups, becoming the second civilian to be hit by stray bullets within 48 hours. The latest incident has heightened fear among residents, many of whom say they are now living in constant anxiety as the violence continues to disrupt daily life and economic activities.
The latest shooting follows a similar incident on Thursday, July 30, when another resident suffered severe injuries after a stray bullet shattered his right leg. Residents say the recurring gunfire has forced many people indoors, while businesses and farming activities have been affected as people fear being caught in the crossfire.
Although security authorities are yet to officially confirm the immediate cause of the latest violence, local reports suggest the clashes are linked to a longstanding communal dispute believed to involve land ownership and traditional authority issues. The conflict has flared up intermittently over the years despite repeated interventions by security agencies and local leaders.
Member of Parliament for Wa West, Superintendent (Rtd.) Peter Lanchene Toobu, has condemned the renewed violence and appealed to the feuding factions to immediately cease hostilities. He called on all parties to embrace dialogue and lawful means of resolving their differences, stressing that no dispute is worth the continued loss of lives and destruction of property.
The MP urged traditional authorities, opinion leaders, youth groups and security agencies to work together to restore calm in the area. He warned that the continued clashes are undermining development in the district and placing innocent lives at risk.
Residents have also appealed to the government and security agencies to strengthen security in the area to prevent further attacks and protect lives and property. Many say they fear the violence could worsen if urgent measures are not taken to restore lasting peace.
As of the time of filing this report, security personnel were monitoring the situation, while authorities had not issued an official statement on the latest shooting. The condition of the injured victim has also not been officially disclosed.
