The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) Director, Mr. Bright Tsadidey has unveiled a bold new initiative to spotlight traditional shrines across the country as key cultural tourism destinations, aimed at diversifying Ghana’s tourism offerings and boosting heritage-based travel.
Speaking on cultural tourism development, Mr. Tsadidey emphasized the immense historical and spiritual value of traditional shrines, many of which have remained underutilized in the country’s tourism narrative.
He described these sacred sites as “untapped cultural assets” that offer both domestic and international tourists a unique opportunity to experience Ghana’s indigenous spirituality, history, and identity.
“We believe it is time to shift the narrative and explore the full depth of our cultural heritage. Traditional shrines are not just religious sites; they are repositories of knowledge, tradition, and ancestral legacy,” Mr. Tsadidey said.
Mr. Tsadidey noted that the promotion of shrine-based tourism would be done with full respect for traditional authorities and custodians of the sites.
GTA director added, he is working closely with traditional leaders, local communities, and cultural experts to ensure that shrine tourism is developed in a responsible and culturally sensitive manner.
Mr. Tsadidey also highlighted the potential economic impact of the initiative, saying that it would create new jobs, stimulate local economies, and support the preservation of intangible cultural heritage.
According to him, eco-cultural tourism has been gaining momentum globally, and Ghana stands to benefit by positioning its indigenous heritage at the forefront of its tourism strategy.
The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) Director, Mr. Bright Tsadidey reveal that plans to begin by identifying and mapping key shrines with potential tourism appeal, followed by infrastructure improvements, community sensitization, and the development of guided tour packages.
Training programs will also be rolled out for local tour guides and cultural interpreters to enhance visitor experience.
